Strontium carbonate (SrCO3) is an inorganic compound, commonly appearing as a white powder or granules, and is odorless and tasteless. It is primarily used in the production of glass, magnetic materials, and fireworks, as well as for preparing other strontium salts. Strontium carbonate is practically insoluble in water but becomes more soluble in the presence of ammonium chloride, ammonium nitrate, or carbon dioxide. In pyrotechnics, it is a key component for creating vibrant red colors in flames.

  • Synthesis of other Strontium Compounds: Because strontium carbonate is a weak Lewis base, it can react with various acids to produce a wide range of strontium salts. For example, reacting it with nitric acid forms strontium nitrate, which is used in pyrotechnics and other applications.
  • Superconductors and Electroluminescent Materials: Strontium carbonate is a component in some superconductor materials like BSCCO. It's also used in the production of electroluminescent materials. In this process, it's first calcined to strontium oxide (SrO), then mixed with sulfur to create SrS:x, which acts as a phosphor.
