Molecular Weight 342.30 g/mol

Maltose, also known as malt sugar, is a disaccharide composed of two glucose units linked together by a glycosidic bond, with the chemical formula C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁. It is a white, crystalline, water-soluble sugar with a mild, sweet taste, found in malt, grains like barley, and partially hydrolyzed starch products. In the body, enzymes called maltases break down maltose into two glucose molecules, which can then be used for energy or stored as glycogen.

Industrial Uses

1. Performance Chemicals

  • Building Complex Carbohydrates: Maltose serves as a building block in the synthesis of more complex carbohydrates like glycogen, a stored form of glucose.
  • Intermediates: The 1,6-Anhydro-β-maltose structure is a useful intermediate for creating synthetic intermediates like per-O-acetylated and benzylidene-protected derivatives of maltose.

2. Pharmaceuticals

  • Parenteral Nutrition: Pharmaceutical-grade maltose is used in injections and intravenous fluids as an energy source because it is metabolized with minimal insulin and is more efficient at supplying calories than glucose.
  • Stabilizer: It prevents protein aggregation in biopharmaceuticals like intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) solutions, which can reduce the treatment's efficacy and cause adverse effects. It is used in the creation of dissolvable microneedles, enhancing the drug delivery system's mechanical strength and stability.

3. Food & Healthcare ingredients

  • Brewing and Alcohol Production: Maltose is a crucial fermentable sugar derived from grains like barley, which yeast convert into alcohol during the production of beer and distilled spirits.
  • Baking and Confectionery: It serves as a sweetener and helps create a desirable texture in products like bread, pastries, candies, and savory biscuits. Its caramel-like flavor is also utilized in some candies and baked goods.
  • Beverages: Maltose is an additive in many non-alcoholic beverages, including soft drinks and fruit juices, where it acts as a sweetener and flavor enhancer.

4. Personal care

  • Moisturizing and Hydration: As a humectant, maltose draws and retains moisture in the skin, which helps to keep it soft and supple.
  • Skin Conditioning: It acts as a skin conditioning agent, nourishing and protecting the skin and contributing to its overall health.
  • Emollient: Maltose can soften and smooth the skin's surface, which is particularly beneficial for dry and sensitive skin types.
