Ethylene dichloride (also known as 1,2-dichloroethane) is a clear, heavy liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. It is primarily used as an intermediate in the production of vinyl chloride, which is the main precursor to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastics. It also serves as an industrial solvent and degreasing agent.

Industrial Uses

1. Performance Chemicals

  • Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) Production: EDC is the primary feedstock for producing VCM through thermal cracking. VCM is then polymerized to PVC. This is by far the largest and most important industrial role of EDC.
  • Intermediate in Chlorinated Chemicals: EDC is used to manufacture other chlorinated compounds like ethyleneamines and ethylene glycol derivatives, which are raw materials for antifreeze, solvents, and surfactants.
  • Solvent in Chemical Reactions: Because of its solvent properties, it is used as a medium for reactions requiring a stable, non-flammable chlorinated solvent.
  • Organic Synthesis: Used as a solvent in lab-scale reactions for synthesizing organic compounds that require a chlorinated medium.
  • Extraction and Purification: Sometimes employed to extract or purify chemicals due to its solvent power.

2. Polymer & Resins

  • PVC Manufacturing: EDC’s role is indirect but critical, as it is converted to VCM, the monomer that polymerizes into PVC, which is used for rigid and flexible plastic products such as pipes, insulation, flooring, and packaging films.
  • Plasticizer Production: Some plasticizers and additives used to improve PVC flexibility may be synthesized using EDC as an intermediate.

3. Metal Treatment

  • Degreasing Agent: Used for removing oil, grease, and wax from metal parts prior to painting, coating, or assembly. EDC’s high solvency and relatively low flammability make it effective for cleaning delicate metal surfaces without damage.
  • Surface Preparation: Ensures metals are free from contaminants for better adhesion of coatings and finishes.

4. Paints, Coatings & Adhesives

  • Solvent Role: EDC dissolves resins, polymers, and other components to improve application properties like spreading and drying time in adhesives and paints.
  • Evaporation Rate Control: It helps control the evaporation rate of coatings, ensuring uniform application and curing.

5. Pharmaceuticals

  • Solvent & Intermediate: Occasionally employed as a solvent for organic synthesis or intermediate in manufacturing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) where chlorinated solvents are suitable.
  • Specialized Synthesis: Useful in reactions requiring a stable chlorinated solvent environment.
