Cadmium chloride

Cadmium chloride

cadmium dichloride; dichlorocadmium

CAS 10108-64-2

Chemical Formula CdCl₂

Molecular Weight 183.32 g/mol

Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) is a white, crystalline, hygroscopic, and highly water-soluble salt. It's used in various applications, including pigments for plastics, ceramics, and glasses, as a protective coating on steel, and in nickel-cadmium batteries.

Industrial Uses

1. Performance Chemicals

  • Precursor to other cadmium compounds: Cadmium chloride serves as a starting material for synthesizing other cadmium-containing compounds, such as cadmium sulfide (CdS), which is a bright yellow pigment, and cadmium selenide (CdSe), used in semiconductors and photovoltaic cells.
  • Biginelli reaction: CdCl2 has been used as a catalyst in the Biginelli reaction, which is a one-pot synthesis of dihydropyrimidinones.
  • [2+3]-cycloaddition: Cadmium chloride can also catalyze the [2+3]-cycloaddition of NaN3 with nitriles to form 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles.

2. Energy

  • Perovskite Solar Cells: Cadmium chloride is used as an additive in the perovskite precursor solution.
  • Improved PV Properties: CdCl₂ helps improve the growth of perovskite crystals, resulting in larger grain sizes and improved crystallinity, which in turn enhances charge transport and reduces charge recombination.
  • Production of cadmium telluride: Cadmium chloride (CdCl₂) is used specifically in the production of cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film solar cells, where it acts as an additive to enhance performance and stability. It improves the photovoltaic (PV) properties of the perovskite layer by enhancing crystal growth, tailoring crystalline properties, boosting charge transport, passivating domain boundaries, and enhancing hydrophobicity, leading to higher power conversion efficiency and better stability.
