• Oxidation of Alcohols: Bismuth tribromide, in combination with hydrogen peroxide, effectively oxidizes alcohols to carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones). This reaction is particularly useful because it's organic solvent-free, cost-effective, and environmentally benign. It can oxidize primary and secondary benzylic, allylic, and aliphatic alcohols. 
• Synthesis of Polyhydroquinolines: Bismuth tribromide serves as an efficient catalyst in the synthesis of polyhydroquinolines via the Hantzsch reaction. This method offers mild conditions, short reaction times, high yields, and low toxicity. 
• Synthesis of Tetrahydroquinoline Derivatives: Bismuth tribromide is also used in the synthesis of substituted tetrahydroquinolines through a three-component coupling reaction. This application is notable for its use of a relatively inexpensive and easy-to-handle catalyst. 
• Allylation of THF and THP Ethers: Bismuth tribromide catalyzes the allylation of tetrahydrofuranyl and tetrahydropyranyl ethers, followed by derivatization with acetic anhydride to form functionalized esters. 
• Green Chemistry Applications: The relatively low toxicity of bismuth compounds makes BiBr3 a suitable catalyst for green chemistry approaches. By using Bismuth tribromide, researchers can reduce the hazards associated with more toxic catalysts. 

2. Pharmaceuticals

• Bismuth in Pharmaceuticals: Bismuth compounds have a long history of use in treating gastrointestinal problems like ulcers and diarrhea. They work by forming a protective layer on the ulcer surface, preventing further erosion from stomach acid and promoting healing. 
• Bismuth and H. pylori: Bismuth compounds, often combined with antibiotics, are effective in treating infections caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a bacterium that can lead to gastritis and peptic ulcers.
