Benzoyl chloride

Benzoyl chloride

Benzoic acid chloride; Alpha-chlorobenzaldehyde; Benzenecarbonyl chloride; BzCl

CAS 98-88-4

Chemical Formula C6H5COCl

Molecular Weight 140.57 g/mol

Benzoyl chloride, also known as benzenecarbonyl chloride, is an organochlorine compound with the formula C7H5ClO. It is a colourless, fuming liquid with an irritating odour, and consists of a benzene ring with an acyl chloride substituent. It is mainly useful for the production of peroxides but is generally useful in other areas such as in the preparation of dyes, perfumes, pharmaceuticals, and resins.

Industrial Uses

1. Agrochemicals

  • Intermediate: Used as Essential intermediate for synthesizing herbicides (benzinoxone) and insecticides (benzoate and hydrazine derivatives)

2. Paints, Coatings & Adhesive

  • Precursor: It serves as a precursor for various chemicals, including benzyl esters and ethers, which are used as solvents, plasticizers, and additives in these applications.

3. Pharmaceuticals

  • Intermediate: Serves as a key intermediate in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Specifically, it is used in the production of benzoyl peroxide

4. Fabric Solutions

  • Intermediate: Used primarily as a chemical intermediate for producing dyes and pigments, and as a treatment to modify fibers. It's also used in certain finishing processes to enhance the properties of textiles.

5. Performance Chemicals

  • Acylating agent: It is a versatile acylating agent in organic synthesis, used to introduce a benzoyl group (C6H5CO-) into various molecules. It reacts readily with nucleophiles like amines, alcohols, and water, forming amides, esters, and benzoic acid, respectively.

6.  Polymers & Resins

  • Precursor: As a precursor for benzoyl peroxide, a widely used polymerization initiator. It also serves as a building block for various other polymers and resins.
